Heather on the Field at Dawn

Sandpapered Dreams

So long ago just a youth traversing England
Stepped outside the inn one night
Wandering along the emerald fields I lost myself
In the dew?s reflection of the light.

The fields of heather, growing all around
Never seen such violet hues before
Rustling in the breeze, they help me remember
Beckon me down to rest there evermore.

Oh Heather on the field at dawn
Bringing back so many memories
Restless nights in the twilight breeze
Why must you be gone, so far gone?
Heather on the field at dawn.

Her heart was strong, "It won't be long," she told herself,
?Til he'd be coming home once more
But she left her bed, looked out instead, took in the night
Donned a robe and tiptoed out the door.

Oh Heather on the field at dawn
Her shadows grace the moistened ground
Oh Tell me, babe, when you have found
The answers in the dawn, the summer dawn
Heather on the field at dawn.

Her body tingled with wild anticipation
Like a cat she climbed the trees
Resting on a branch she unfastened all her bindings
Opened up her robe into the twilight breeze.

As the robe slipped off and tangled in the branches
Heather's skin the moon made fair
Her long hair rustled wildly as she leaned back
Letting her body hover in the midnight air.

I walked along, came into her shadow
When I watched her fall to Earth
Caught her in my arms and held her close to me
Like a child and yet so old was she
Like a friend I knew unconsciously
With a fire in her eyes that set me free.

Oh Heather on the field at dawn
Wrapped up in my jacket as she slept
She warmed me deeply as the violet sky wept
Bits of heather on the lawn, falling on the lawn
Heather on the field at dawn.

Oh Heather on the field at dawn
When I woke up she was gone
Bare was the land I looked upon
I would have held her all night long, all night long
Heather on the field at dawn.

Though she's gone in every measure
I will never lose the pleasure
Of Heather on the field at dawn.
