Better Days

We pulled up to Beech Hill Pond
On Friday afternoon
Embraced our pals and marked another year
I left my shirt on the picnic table
And dove into the lake
Glad to finally once again be here
Catch a ripple in the river of the sky
It will send you so high
Spread your body in the sun-soaked grass
Let the hurricane pass
Make the most of the better days before they have passed you by
Tommy and Joyce get the guitars out
As we dance between the boats
Unraveling a long-forgotten tune
As the sun descends, we retell
Stories 'round the fire
And shoot off bottle rockets at the moon
We remember just the highlights of the past
All the rest is a blur
Don't you know that the older you are
The better you were?
You all were immortal then but now you're not so sure
And as I sit here and look at the rest
I have to wonder, is my direction best?
Should I change my course and push myself for more?
And if you try to look upon my soul
Will you discover just another hole
I'm so tired, so tired of reaching for the door
We remember just the highlights of the past
All the rest is a blur
Don't you know that the older you are
The better you were?
You all were immortal then but now you're not so sure
As the summer turns to fall
I clear my mind of the haze
And ask myself, were those really better days?
Catch a ripple in the river of the sky
It will send you so high
Spread your body in the sun-soaked grass
Let the hurricane pass
Make the most of the better days before they have passed you by
Before they have passed you by
Before they have passed you by ...
